knock/tick after oil change

knock/tick after oil change
I have a 94 f150 with a 4.9 with a manual transmission. Truck has an unknown amount of miles, 180,000 +. The last oil change was done by firestone 5 months ago. I just got off the phone with them and they told me they put in 5w20 kendall titanium part synthetic oil. Yesterday I put in 10w30 gtx high mileage part synthetic (florida) and I immediately noticed a slight knock in the engine. It kinda sounds like an inconsistent tick. The truck does have a small exhaust leak that sounds different so its definitely not it. All i did was change the oil. After driving around it drives fine, just has that ticking noise coming from the engine.
Any suggestions? Should i go back to 5w20? I thought slightly thicker oils are used for high mileage not thinner. I dont have an oil pressure gauge, but i might pick one up if there cheap and its easy to use.

What type of oil filter did you use. I have heard same type of issues caused by certain oil filters. Try using a Motorcraft oil filter just to see if that helps. May or may not help but at least it is not a high cost item to try to see if it helps.

Use the weight oil the truck was designed for, the tolerances in these engines do NOT like thicker oil no matter how many miles are on them.

Definitely make sure you have the correct oil weight and filter. Had a '97 F-150, used a Fram Filter and got the same results with the engine ticking after filter change. Went back to a Motorcraft filter and problem solved. Mine was a 4.6 liter, but I agree that it would be a good and inexpensive place to start.

Hi every one,
Altough my issue seems similar to the one under discussion, my ford F150 Triton V8, 4.6L SOHC engine is making a ticking/tapping + puffing noise on the right side (pasenger side) of the engine. The noise is very low on park-idling and loud when the truck is on gear. when idling at a traffic light, the ticking/tapping noise is about 2 times per second, and gets faster on acceleration. I can hear it best when I open the hood. What can cause such noise. The truck is 1999 Ford F150 with 150,000 miles. I just took the truck to firestone for an oil change a month ago. I notice on the invoice that theu used SAE 5W20 oil and not the Ford recommended 5W30, and the noise started 2 weeks after that.

If they didn't use a motor craft filter then I'd bet that's the source.of the problem. I've dealt with a ton of mustangs (including my 02gt) as well as a bunch of f150's that had a tick whenever a motor craft filter wasn't used. Threw on the MC filter and the noise went away.
Also, you could always go back and tell them it calls for 5w30, not 20, and tell them you want the correct oil.
Also, ask to see the oil jugs to make sure they're putting in what they say they are. I worked as a tech at a dealer, and have seen other dealers just have straight 30 wt in their big tanks a.d that's what all oil changes get no matter what the vehicle calls for.

The best thing to do is bring them the filter you want to use. I normally change my own oil, but If I get a shop to do it, I bring them a NAPA Platinum filter.
The Best Filter in my opinion.

Hi every one,
After all, your suggestions were correct! I took the truck to 2 mechanics and they all wanted to replace the exaust manifold.
I purchased the Motorcraft oil filter and the Motorcraft 5W30 oil. After changing the filter and the oil myself, I ran the truck on the highway for 30 minutes at 55-65 MPH.
The noise disappeared completely!
You guys are my Heroes!.
Thanks and regards,
