Default Ignition Wire placement

I ran across this little tid-bit on the Motorcraft parts website.

NEW FIRING ORDER - NEW FIRING ORDER 1 3 7 2 6 5 4 8 FOR 1994 TRUCK. TO ELIMINATE THE POSSIBILITY OF CROSSFIRE BETWEEN CYLINDERS 1 & 3 OR 5 & 6 DO NOT PUT THESE WIRES NEXT TO EACH OTHER IN THE SEPARATORS ON THE VALVE COVERS

Transmaster, I've heard of this back in the 80's, it did correct a plug fouling problem on a mid 80's 302. Didn't understand then and still don't today.

The only thing I can think of is if you happen to have bad spark plug wires with broken down insulation which lets the ignition impulses cross over. I just don't see how it would be a problem with modern cable material. I wonder if this is something that started when they went to the much hotter electronic ignitions it is possible the older insulation just couldn't hack the extra power.
