Default Ignition control module fails

I replaced the ignition control module on my 1996 f150 4.9. The new module smoked and melted when I hit the starter. Replaced with new one with same result. Completed this two times.

Sounds like you have a wiring problem. Check your negative cable from the battery, both ends. Might be that you have bad connections there and the starter current is passing through your ignition module. Battery cables are so big only because they have to handle starter motor current.
