It happened the day I was heading out of town so it really sucked. but it takes 5 min to change it out.
My truck did the same thing haha. Cyl 1 coil crapped out on me the day I had to go out of town for training during a snow storm lol.

Here are 4 other reported fixes:
Replaced Differential Pressure Feedback EGR (DPHE) Sensor
Cleaned EGR Passages
Cleaned EGR Transfer Tube
Replaced EGR Modulator

Possible Causes:
DPFE Sensor Downstream Hose Off or Plugged
DPFE Sensor Hoses (Both) Off, Loose, or Damaged
DPFE Sensor Hoses are Reversed (Installed Wrong)
DPFE Sensor Reference Circuit (5volt) is open or shorted to ground
DPRE Sensor Signal Circuit is shorted to ground
EGR Orifice Tube is damaged or restricted
PCM has failed

The printout for the p0401 code repeated each of these causes twice for each suggestion, so more than one item may be present and both should be checked [or replaced] in that case.
These are merely suggested causes and fixes, and carries with them NO Liability for this advice.

I asked on a different thread, and nobody responded. What are you guys using for a code reader? I see Actron has many choices to choose from. I'm looking for something cheap just to spit out the problem codes.

Hey all! I own a 2002 f-150 4.6L V8. I've got the engine code P0401 coming up and I've tried a few different things to fix it. I don't know what to try next.
1) replaced the gas cap
2) replaced the EGR valve and seal.
Cleared the code out and took it for a test drive but no luck. It threw out the same code again. Where should I go from here? I'm trying to sell it but I don't want to show my truck to people with a trouble code showing up.
