The way I find TDC is put my finger over the #1 cylinder and have someone manually turn the crank until I feel compression coming out of the cylinder and bring the piston all the way to the top and that's TDC once the crank is positioned correctly just line up all the marks. After you have everything lined up and put together turn the engine slowly by hand just to make sure there is no interference and you should be good.

That's the reason for putting your finger over the #1 sparkplug hole and feeling the compression because on the exhaust stroke there will be no compression, only on the compression stroke.

If chains are not in place the valves on #1 won't necessarily be closed, T/F?

If chains are not in place just put the #1 cylinder piston all the way to the top and line up all of the marks.
