Hello - catalytic replacement question.
This is my first post with this log in, I may have posted before but lost info. I have a 2003 F150 2wd 4.6l Triton. Anyway, Ive read up on some of the catalytic converter replacement threads and have a question I had not seen answered. It appears that my drivers side read cat is plugged and needs to be replaced. I see the individual cats ($50+) as well as assemblies for each side($250+) for sale. The quotes ive had to weld in the rear are nearly as much as if i just bought the bolt on assembly for that side. Is there a solution im missing? If i cut the old read cat free, i am able to install the new one with muffler clamps or something and save $150 over buying the whole assembly? Thanks for your help.
Aftermarket cats are typically three way which means they take care of hc, co and nox. Ford cats split those into two separate units per side. You are better off buying the unit designed for your truck, just make sure that what ever caused the failure/the cat to get plugged is fixed or it will do it again.
Oh, and with the amount of heat there, a muffler clamp will never hold that thing on. That is Why they are welded or bolted on from the factory.
