Default Grinding/Groaning from front end when IN 4WD..

2014 f150.. have been noticing a grinding/groaning/some vibration from the front end when in 4WD. Finding lots of info about problems with the IWE actuators and solenoid when in 2wd. Anyone having this issue when in 4wd?

Could still be one or both of the IWEs are bad and not completely engaging. If noise goes away when you are in 2WD and never happens, then your vacuum, solenoid and check valve are good. Other things that have been known to make similar noises are the front diff and possibly the transfer case. If it were me, the first thing I'd look at are the IWEs. Have you had any front end work that involved the hub at all? Even if it was just removing them to replace something else. The reassembly of the hub, if not done correctly can damage the IWE.

Just posted this up under a similar post. Hope this helps.

I had the awful grinding noises on my 2017 F-150 3.5 Ecoboost 4X4 XLT (after only 7 months and less than 10,000 miles of ownership) and after numerous trips to the dealer and them saying they heard nothing they finally heard the grinding and diagnosed it as a bad IWE on the front passenger side. No codes came up, no low vaccuum. Part apparently just failed. Now I am dealing with more grinding noises from under the truck. Dealership replaced entire front passenger side axle, IWE, and whatever the heck else. Got it back and grinding noises continued. They have it now and say they can't hear anything. Say they are checking for a rattle. LOL. Incompetence I tell you. Keep after them and good luck. I am at my wits end with mine (based on other issues to boot).

Ford needs to get away from those 4x4 vacuum operated front ends. Save people a lot of trouble that they shouldn't be having in the first place, especially people with basically new trucks.

Anyone get errors on their dash with the IWE/Actuator issues? I posted this a bit ago... this is still an on-going story, the dealership finally got it to duplicate and said it was spitting out 80 trouble codes live. They put a call into Ford directly because they have no idea where to begin to find the root of the issue...now are chasing down Ford's suggestions and I have a little Edge loaner which really stinks when you need a truck to get things done.

Never heard of throwing a code relating to vacuum/IWE issues. Please let us know what is found.

Run it in 4wd a mile or so on an appropriate surface (dirt/gravel) and then dip a little oil out of the front fill plug and look at it. Front diffs get little use and tend to be condensation traps, depending on climate. Your carrier bearings may be rusted. Both the '05 and my '13 surprised me with the color of the oil. Neither had ever been in deep water.

So far they are dumbfounded they did find a loose wiring harness, which lasted about 3 days worth of a fix...it went right back a week ago now and still trying to find the root of the issue.
