Engine Whine
Hi guys,
I have an '03 f150 4.2l that has developed a whine around 2000 RPM.
I've looked through some threads here and others have said it could be the idler pulley. So I replaced it and still have the whine.
It's more pronounced in 1st, 2nd, and 3rd gears, I barely hear it in 4th and not at all in 5th. I hear it whether it's in gear or out, I've sat in the driveway and revved up to 2grand and it's there. A guy at work said he thought it could be the throw-out bearing but he wasn't sure either. I hope it's not that since I had the clutch replaced 2 years ago.
So, does anyone have any ideas?
Thanks.

Check these items: cooling fan fluid clutch, idler pulley on the belts, A/C compressor clutch bearing, power steering pump bearing. Engine RPM's will make the noise come and go especially if one of these items has a dry bearing. Remove the belt and start spinning these parts by hand. They should be smooth and quiet. R&R as needed.
