Engine or Transmission Problem?
This is a shudder (a "jerk") in two conditions:
1. At idle in D (drive)
2. about 40-50mph with very light throttle
I can mash the gas a little more at 40-50 to make it go away. I can also put the car in neutral when stopped to make it go away (raises RPM by about 3-400). It is a random blip -- seemed to show up a little more in cold/rainy conditions.
Tranny was having a hard-shift symptom awhile back and it turned out to be low fluid. I changed what fluid I could and replaced the filter and it's shifted perfect ever since.
I also know I have a little bit of a traction lock clutch grinding sound but it only shows up when turning.
So I'm not ruling out spark plugs yet...

I'm kind of having the same issue. 80K miles. My truck just has a small "blip" while accelerating (take into consideration I drive like an old GrandPa). Does fine on the hiway & at stop lights. It just seems to "stutter" slightly while accelerating. No codes flashing or anything. I've only owned this truck for a few months so I don't know the history. I bought it from a Ford dealer in Salt Lake City. I drove it to Vegas w/ no problems. I'm not sure if they changed fuel filter, plugs or anything. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
If it helps, my issue ended up being coolant in the spark plug well on the driver side front spark plug. I have not discovered the source of the fluid yet...just happy that it drives well until I can get around to a permanent solution.
I called my brother who owns an '08 w/ 5.4 etc he bought new. He said his does the same thing. His only has 28K miles
I have a 02 5.4 with 132000 only had it 2 weeks and my truck at about 45-55 is (jerking/shutter) shifts fine and idols fine let off the gas and it stops give it gas and it will stop but no check engine light on???? Please help just for the truck
My '07 5.4 is doing the same thing. 75k miles. Between 40 and 50 mph, under VERY light acceleration, it stutters. You have to kick into passing gear to get it to quit. Very annoying. I had it checked and nothing came up on the computer and nothing on dash. The guy said he thought it might be the tranny. A mechanic I know, without looking at it, said it sounds like plugs to him. Both aren't cheap and I don't wanna just throw money at it. Any ideas???
This is most surely the spark plugs. When I was test driving my truck it had 98k miles. It did this exact same thing. Honestly I thought it was the trans or engine miss.
I made this part of the deal. They changed the plugs and the issue went right away. Talking to the tech at the independent mechanic he stated that he sees several of these 5.4L and its usually always the spark plugs or the coils.
Seeing the plugs that he pulled out, broke 5, they were well past their service life. The gap was well enlarged as in 3 times or more larger then original new plugs.
Basic maint guys! Do those first. Fuel injector cleaner usually won't help. Go back to good maint practices.
