Default Engine misfire? Advice please...

Hello all, I am new to the forum...I drive a 2005 F150 with a 5.4L V8 in it...it has roughly 58k miles on it...

Today while driving home I was behind someone and went to pass them...for whatever reason they thought it would be funny to speed up and try to prevent my pass (dotted yellow line)....at any rate, I really had to gun the engine to complete the pass...

When I looked down my "Check Engine" light was flashing...it did this for maybe 30 more seconds? a minute? and then went off....I just coasted as I looked down...the truck seemed to drive normally after the light went off...

After looking in the manual I see this is the code for an engine misfire....I have stopped and restarted the truck, and get no warning lights, and the engine seems to be running fine...I have accelerated some, but not like I did to make the pass, and it has not happened again...

Do I need to take the truck in ASAP? As you can tell, I am not a gearhead, but I love this truck, and would like it to run for another 300k miles if it can...it is regularly maintenanced, etc.....

any advice or help is welcome!

Thanks,

Kev

Default Engine Misfire

I have a 05 Supercrew 5.4L with 90k and experienced this about a week ago. Went to Pepboys (they were closest) and they ran a scan on it - showed #4 cyl misfire. Mechanic said it was more than likely the coil pack going out. They wanted $65.00 - went to O'Reily's and got one for $42.00. Haven't had the chance to replace yet and today on the way home from work I noticed the hesitation on acceleration again. Didn't get the engine light and after about 20 seconds of light throttle never notice it again. Hope to change out this weekend and also want to pull code again to verify what the mechanic at Pepboy said.
Hope this helps.

The Pros say to fill the boots with dielectric grease when installing, don't forget it.

I had a miss fire on #6 and it turned out to be a split boot on the plug wire. It was fireing out to the manefold heat shield. Might check plug boots as well.

Im replacing the plug today, and the coil tomorrow ( had to order it). I hope that solves the problem.

I've had no issues with my 2005 F-50 other than this misfire. I have had two coils replaced by the dealer under warranty. When it started having the same symptoms I changed all plugs and cops. This was 2 months ago. Yesterday while getting on the pedal to get on the Hwy it just went limp. Almost as if the Cat. was plugged. It just started running really rough. Nothing like before, this was bad. Check engine light flashing and all. I took it to the dealer this morning. Let's see what they say.

So it was a COP cylinder#5. It had never missed that bad but problem is fixed. I was able to make a deal with the dealer to replace the COP for $220.00. Diagnostic and COP replacement. Maybe because it was #5 and easy to get to. Original Quote was $350.00. I told him I couldn't see myself paying 200.00+ for a 5 minute job when I have 6 good "used" COPs at home.

I have this same exact problem. 73k miles. I'm planning on gettin the plugs changed in a couple weeks. My check engine light did the same as stated in the first post, so will it store the code and I can have it scanned? Thanks for the help
