dies while shifting
1990 F150 Lariat will die while shifting. Died on hwy at 55 mph and on a dirt road at 20 mph. While shifting both times. No sputter, no hesitation, just like all power is cut. Codes indicate a malfunction in the shift solenoid. After the vehicle dies the engine will turn, but not fire, at all. after sitting a while it will start normally. It has only died twice. did not want to push my luck. any advice or observation would be very appreciated.
I assume that you have a manual transmission. I have always driven an automatic but from what I understand it could be you clutch throw bearing ( I believe that is what it is called) It is as if you are attemping to shift with out pressing the clutch pedal. This, as you know, would cause the engine to stall. After much use the tolerances for the clutch pedal increase. You may note the increased pressure on the clutch pedal minimizes the occurance. Just a thought. I was watching one of those car shows wich had a similar problem.
i gotta ask how would shifting w/o the clutch casue it die? i shift without the clutch in litteraly every standard vehicle i drive and have never had one die on me for not using the clutch wihile shifting. now stoping with out putting the clutch in would cause that, but not shifting with out it.
and i would asume that the op's truck is auto since he said the codes point to a shift solinoid. i wish i could help him there but i cant come up with any ideas
