Dead engine!
Hi all and Happy Father's Day to all of you! I'll cut to the chase. I have a 2001 Super Crew(5.4) and recently my engine was making a ticking sound. I took it to a shop and they said it sounded deep in the engine. Lo and behold it started making a clanking sound just a few days after. I'm going to pull the oil pan and see if anything falls out. If I find really bad news I plan on finding a replacement engine of some sort. So what else besides the 5.4 will work, in case I can't find one? Or should I pick up a rebuilt block and swap parts off of mine? All help is appreciated! Thanks again!!!
Sounds like you lost a rod or the oil pump. Unless you can find a low milage motor at a wrecking yard I buy a long block rebuilt motor, assuming the truck is worth the investment. I did my 70 F250 @ 200K miles and I'm still driving it @ 297K miles. good luck
Thanks Marc! I still have oil pressure so my plan is to drop the oil pan and take a quick look. I have seen some motors on eBay with warranties and I should be able to find someone locally to install. I'm not set up to do that sort of thing.
Another thing to keep in mind is the transmission, depending on how long you plan to keep the truck (13yo already) would dictate what kind of replacement, also keep in mind the current mileage.
Most economical would be a used engine from a wreck, typically salvage yards will pull a good engine/transmission and put them on a shelf wrapped up or plugged to maintain internal integrity and come with a warranty of some type.
Other option is to replace with a Ford remanufactured engine, those typically come with the same warranty a new truck carries, not certain on warranty specifics, call around and ask for quotes, just keep in mind how long you wish to keep the vehicle.
Going to a different engine configuration would be the most expensive new or used because then you would likely have to modify mounting brackets, wiring harnesses, control computers, etc..
