Intermittent cam phaser over retarded bank 2. My mechanic decided to put in a heavier oil weight to keep it from shuttering. Is this the right call?

Any Ford engine with cam phasers should only use 5W20.

It will damage the engine. The tighter tolerances in today's engines do not play well with any oil viscosity other than what the manufacturer recommends.
