Default box side steps will not retract

I have a 2010 lariat with the box side steps ( not running boards) and for the life of me I can not get them to release out!!!!

I know weather is a factor but it has been plus 12-19 the past few days here in Calgary Canada.

I put some white lithium grease spray on an hour ago.

Anybody have an issue with theirs???? A fix???

I think they work on a compression cylinder and it has a rubber covering. Probably has debris from winter but I can't get it to come out at all.

ideas

Thanks

May be a stupid question, but did you try and manually release them? After all winter here in Newfoundland, mine were the same way. I just pushed on the release mechanism while grabbing and pulling the step from the back of each unit. After that, I cleaned all the crap off the steps, manually pushed and pulled the steps several times and all has been fine since........

Default side steps on f150

Thanks
I got them working. Really stuck!
Pressure sprayed and used some white lithium grease I use on my fifth wheel hitch. Seems to be fine now.
