Default AC Smell

Hello Everyone,

I was hoping someone might be able to help me with an issue I am having with my AC and Heater in the Truck.

I have a 2012 F150 and ever since October 2012 when I bought it I have been getting a very plastic smell when I turn on the AC or the Heater.

I have taken my Truck to Ford a couple of times about this Issue and the Ford Tech keeps telling me its condensation from my breath that is being sucked into the vents and is condesing on the AC Unit. What a load of BS this guy is trying to tell me.

I am taking my truck back in tomorrow morning and I wanted to know if anyone else has had this issue.

I thought the smell would go away with time but the smell is only getting worse. Again the best way I can describe the smell is a Plastic Smell. My dad descirbes the smell like garbage or a livestock kind of smell.

If anyone can help I would really appreciate it.

Thank You in Advance.

Good luck with it and the only smell I've got and even had it in my 03 was when the AC gets really cold it has a weird smell that's kinda hard to explain but never with the heat.

There is an outside chance a small rodent or large bug got into the return duct of A/C heater box under the dash. More likely it is mold on the air fins in the a/c box. My wife's 4 year old car had this issue and we used a disinfectant spray in the return vent over night and it took several times but it worked.

Thank you for the responses.

I chatted with the General Manager from the Ford Dealership this morning and he told me that they have had issues with mold in the vents. He said the smell is always a moldy smell not a plastic smell.

I have had the AC Unit disinfected once before and for about 2 weeks all I could smell was cleaner. After that cleaner smell wore off it was back to a plastic smell.

The General Manager set me up with an appointment for Wednesday. I will keep you posted about what they plan to do.

Looking forward to the response you get after this appt...I've had the same smell since it picked her up (2 months) and figured it would go away over time.

I took my truck to Ford again. They told me that they looked inside the vents with a camera and found a Green Color inside my vents. They dont think its mold. They think the Green Color is the Air Conditioning Dye that has leaked from the canister and is drying inside the vents and smelling.

They want my truck back for 3 days and they are going to pull apart the dash and remove and replace all of the vents, AC Canister, the AC Lines and everything to do with the AC.

So the truck goes back on Monday next week to get worked on.
