Default AC Compressor Issue

I have a 2002 F150. When the AC is turned on the compressor will run but only a few seconds and then it turns off, then on for a few seconds and off again. When it is running for the few seconds it actually pulls considerable power from the engine, to the point that the lights dim. It makes a slight noise but nothing outrageous. I hate to replace the whole compressor if it is just a clutch or stator problem. Any ideas/recommendations?

Sounds like you're either low on freon or the clutch gap is too wide from wear. Does it cool when it's on?

It throws cool air but it is not what I would consider cold. So if it is low on freon a sensor would be shutting it off to save the compressor?

Yes. There's other things to check as well but I'd want to put a set of gauges on it and see what the pressures look like before I go any further.

That gives me a starting point and hopefully saves me from buying a new compressor. Thanks so much!

In addition to probable low refrigerant, you also likely have a sluggish IAC valve. It's that time of year that they show up more frequently as the winter chill sets in.
