Default 4x4 not working.

Hello, I have a 2014 Fx4. I put it in 4wd last night and front wheels are not engaging. There is a loud metal grinding noise followed by a big clunk periodically coming from back of truck when switching between 4hi and 4L... I am not getting any service lights or anything like that so bot sure of the problem. It has been in negative temps here lately so not sure if that can affect it. What do yall think could be the issue?

Did it work before? How long have you had it?

One thing at at time....

Please let the guy know if it 4x4 works in 4h.
Not fully certain if you mean 4h doesn't work AND you get grinding when shifting to 4l.
If no 4x4, that's tricky because hubs are locked by default. If you shift to 4h and it is not extremely noisy, that should mean it has shifted. Or, the transfer case motor has quit and it is not shifting.

You can shut the truck off, shift transmission to neutral then shift to 4l. Start truck and see if it has engaged 4l.
