I had an 89 5.0
Same basic age. I had a TPS (throttle plate sensor) or something like that get out off whack. There is a test for it with an ohm meter. Just remove and hook up meter and operate and record readings.
The sensor sends a signal to ECM or PCM computer thing and it sets idle. I believe the sensor cost $25 in about 1995.
Its an easy test and doesn't cost any thing to test.
