Default 3rd and 4th gear lost!!!

So this is for my friends 2002 ranger its a 3.0L i belive and has 5spd manual trans. On his way back from D.C he was taking off from a light and shifted 1st 2nd and nothing like no grinding just nothing same in 4th... so all the way home to ohio he did the 1 to 2 to redline shift to 5th
He messed around with it a bit and once in awhile will "find" 3rd and sometimes 4th, its his only means of transport. so we looking for suggestions to what it could be so we can get in and get done.... also was no gridning or failing signs prior to this.
Thanks in advance

Slave cylinder or synchros. Had an '04 Ranger 5spd/4.0L do similar, replaced the slave and it was fine.

OH; labor will put a kick in your buds pants. It was almost 1400 for my new slave.

PPS; Re-reading your post I'd go more of synchros then slave, if the synchros go out it can cause lost gears.

Check for bent fork in the trans as well....cheaper to find a salvage unit more than likely. I found one for $450 and paid to have it put in for $250.I would have done it myself and saved the labor cost but was working to much at the time.
