Just a couple of observation. I have a 5.0 using Mobil 1 5w30 and don't use a drop but I did a proper hard break-in. I also am using the FL500S filter. It looks like a decent filter, I cut open every one. The cans seem a little thin but I've never heard of one blowing.

I got this truck and it had like 14000 miles I do not know what oil was used , I think when you change brands or types it may do a clean out or some thing . I have been watching the oil ,always give a warm up time , I do not run hard . I will see how this oil holds up . truck runs good , does not smoke or any thing . I do not think it was getting full syn from new . I put it in , then 3000 mile and went to semi syn ,

Juan if you go up a few posts I've listed several motorcraft filters that had problems, tears is the main issue. May want to take a look at them and compare them to yours that you cut open.

I'm not convinced. I've cut open the FL500s and the original filter that came on the truck and both were high quality. I will continue to use them. Have you actually cut open any filters?

I cut every filter open. I showed many examples to show the issues. I’ve seen how cheap they are made. The paper tears very easily.

The original filter is different then the motorcraft ones. It’s made by Champion Labs or in some cases wix. My original was a champ labs one and it was a nice filter. I wouldn’t use an aftermarket motorcraft one after I’ve seen all the issues with them. Purolator makes them and since Mann and Hummel took over them their quality has gone down hill big time. That’s about when we started seeing tears in them.

A few years back we had a parts supplier come in to my company trying to sell his wares. He had about five different new oil filters cut open with the intent to show his brand was on par or better than some well known brands. One filter was the cheap Fram like Walmart sells. The materials and construction of that filter were really sub par. I took a picture but it's lost in the cloud but it really was worth a thousand words.
So Advocate01 have any of the members at Bobs actually cut open some new filters to get a good comparison?

Ford synthetic blend oil is a high quality oil that holds up in extreme conditions. If it was me I would stick with servicing it at the dealer with synthetic blend and Motorcraft filter every 5k miles (regular driving). There are many 300k mile Ford fleet work trucks on business rosters that take a beating and run the synthetic blend out of the barrel. It is good stuff!

All API GF-5 motor oils are limited in their additive packages... zinc, phosphorous, etc. so there is very little difference in protection between the Mobil's, Pennzoil's, others. Look at the back of the bottle for the American Petroleum Institutes label and what it means. Ford is not going to put garbage in their vehicles. Some Ford Dealers would not be offering complimentary lifetime powertrain warranties as long as the vehicle is serviced at the dealer with Ford parts and fluids. There are too many high mileage vehicles running without the fancy full synthetic branded oils. But again everyone has their preference.

you should check out the oil filter section on the page. There are new filters cut every day. Some brand new and some that have been used. Oddly enough Fram now makes really decent filters, even their cheapest orange cans that have fibre end caps are holding up better then those motorcrafts. But that’s not a fair comparison really as they are only a few bucks for a filter. They also make higher tiers of filters, for example their ultra line has metal end caps, dual layer synthetic media backed by a wire mesh. They are solid filters, nothing compares to the Fram Ultra at this time in construction or efficiency. They are 99% at 20 microns and flow very well. I’ve started using them a few years back instead of the motorcraft. It’s a few bucks more but it’s peace of mind that it’s not going to tear and trash my engine.

You know that Purolator invented the oil filter, right? Anyway, I don't have a very large sample size. I have been using mostly Pureone filters, the exceptions being the AC Delco UPF64R I use on the Corvette and the FL500S on the F150 5.0. I cut ever filter open and have found no poor quality or failure of filter element. I usually only run filters 5,000 miles so they mostly come out look about new. I'm a registered user over at bobistheoilguy so I've read quite a few oil filter threads

Yes I do. But do you see that I posted 9 examples of failed purolator made motorcraft filters, 8 of which from BITOG and one from this page. Purolator and subsequently motorcraft have become the black sheep of filters over there. It's not common to see a good cut up of one anymore and more common to see a tear or other failure from them. We are also starting to see Wix have issues as well. Mann and Hummel own them now as well and some of their new filters have started to tear. Just because purolator used to be good doesn't mean that they continued to be. Times change. Look at Fram, used to always have the worst looking filters cut open, now they make some of the best. They have gotten better and use quality stuff, and also make filters for many manufacturers. Ford has approached them to make the motorcraft filter as well but Purolator was a few cents cheaper so they got the contract back in the day. I have heard that Ford is aware of the problem and is working with purolator to resolve it... But they have redesigned the filter twice now and even the new ones are tearing still.
