Sealed trans. Manual calls for fluid change and filter. Can a do-it-yourselfer accomplish this without having to buy a million dollars of special tools.

There's an aftermarket dipstick kit available. I personally can't vouch for it, because my 2010 with the 4R75E has a factory dipstick. But, if I had a 6R80 I would sure be willing to give this kit a try. There's a good youtube video, and it looks like a very straightforward install. Not for sure, but I think the guy that made the video is a member here. I think I read it costs in the neighborhood of $200.

Additionally, I replaced my factory pan with a Dorman pan with a drain plug (ended up replacing the drain plug with a Fumoto valve, to make it even easier)
They do make one for the 6R80 as well, and I would highly recommend one, for ease of changing it again down the road.
The Dorman pan for my 4R75E was just under $20 shipped with Amazon prime. I think the 6R80 pan was about the same price.

Sealed for life, only change if used in severe duty and then only at 150,000 miles. <--- from the Ford shop manual.

They must use better fluid, transmissions, torque converters, or a combo of the three, in the newer trucks or something, because you try going that long with the fluid on the somewhat older trucks and you'll end up with torque shudder sure as hell.
