Custom Fabrication DepartmentThis is the section to discuss any and all custom work that you've done or had made that may not be available on the retail market.
I was dipping almost everything. I bought some used running boards for my Ram1500 (don't shoot, yet) I ran out of dip one night painting them and figured VHT Nightshade (usually used for my headlights/taillights) was black...let's try it!.
I found out it resulted in the perfect amount of transparency to turn any silver or Chrome into a shiny black chrome.
Ive done my F150 rims with it as well as emblems.
This picture is the nightshade done on stock rims.
I apologize for the...uh....finger.. was sent to a friend originally but I haven't seen VHT on chrome here yet and thought I'd throw out the tip.
Looks good. any chance you'd take a closer pic of your front emblem? I'm using a blacked out with red font Ford sticker - .- thinking it'll only last a short time.
what'd you use?
Oh wow that looks great... what kind of prep work did you do on the wheels? Also how many coats?
all I did was clean the brake dust and dirt off with a wet rag then spray.... obviously one could do MUCH MORE but I wiped it down and tested 1 spoke and took it from there

I'd suggest using a paint prep spray to remove any wax or oils, you should be able to find it in the Duplicolor cage at your parts store. If this isn't available I'd use acetone.
So upon some further research, quite a few people say it looks more purple than black and after a few months it starts to look pretty bad and the color breaks down.... can you keep us updated with your experience? This will probably be a spring project for me anyway since I have some other projects that are taking precedence.
