I recently added a second battery to my truck. My install was a little unusual compared to most. There was a winding path to this modification.
I started with a drop. I put on a Ridetech drop kit with a rear sway bar and helper air bags. Ridetech offers a small onboard compressor to make adjustments on the fly. I liked this option, so this got installed.
This is the compressor mounted under the bed, behind the spare tire.
I don't like splicing into the factory wiring harness (if I can help it). So I bought a "Painless" add on fuse box. From this I would add any accessories that I wanted down the road. I pulled out the cubby that sits on the passenger's side near the tail gate and installed a fuse box. This fuesbox offers four (4) ignition hot and three (3) constant hot circuits. It also has a circuit breaker and a relay.
Pics of fuse box.
I modified the cover to include controls for the Ridetech compressor. While I was at it, I added a cigarette lighter jack. I took a plastic box like what you would use for small electronic projects and epoxied it to the stock cover. Then I ran a bead of silicone around the box to prevent any water intrusion.
Compressor controls
I could have put these in the cab, but I figured if I just loaded the truck and I needed a little boost, the controls were handy at the tail gate.
I also wired my bed lights to this fuse box on a separate circuit.
As a little side note, you can buy fuses that when they "blow" they "glow". I replaced all of these with "glow" fuses so I could easily spot a fuse that was blown.
So, what the hell does this have to do with a second battery?
Every time I went to use this, by primary battery did not have enough charge to run anything. Nothing I was doing required a lot of amps. The bed light are LED and the compressor was only used for short spurts, so I decided on a motorcycle battery.
So, I picked this battery: Weize YTX30L-BS, 12Volt, 30Ah. I had an aluminum box made for it.
I have a Supercab, that I have pulled out the rear seats and put in a Goose Gear Rear deck system (which I really like). I mounted this battery behind the passenger seat under the deck. I mounted a battery isolator on this box.
My finger points to the isolator. I used a TrueAM isolator. I used #6 gauge wire to the primary battery, I ran the cable under the cab and into the Goose Gear Deck. I used a grommet at the penetration. This is a link to the kit: Heavy duty large battery isolator | Auxiliary battery kit | True Amalgamated, Inc
You can probably find this on Amazon or ebay cheaper.
This is a connection at the battery.
So far, everything works as expected. I will follow up in a couple of months and give an update.
