My truck has version 3.4 which as I understand is the latest version. However, yesterday just for grins I searched for an update, which it found and installed and now shows updated as of yesterday. So...are there 'patches' of some sort done here and there and available as an update?

Yes. Of the released builds in the 3.4 version, there are at least 10. 3.4.21265 appears to be the newest build at the moment.
