I find it ironic you're complaining bout spending $5-7k extra on a supercharger when you spent $20k extra in options for the truck you have

I had a Ford Probe - at the time it was going to be Ford's replacement for the Mustang. Was not a bad car in it's day - I literally drove mine to death. At the end, I drove it to the junkyard & got 75 bucks for it.

I have a Scab with the 2.7, and I find it to be very well balanced. It tows well, the mileage isn't terrible, and if I need the power, it's definitely there. It just feels right under the hood of this truck. In fact, this is the most capable truck I have ever owned. I really had a hard time getting over the displacement size at first, but that soon went away. I drove both the 5.0 and this one, and chose the 2.7. It is the smallest sized and largest feeling engine I have ever owned, and I give it a big thumbs-up. Good luck to you.

If holding the same speed, sure. When pushing the go faster pedal forward, no. The 2.7 will save you gas because you can't dump as much into the engine as with the 5.0 or 3.5eco when you are heavy on the pedal.

There's a lot of factors to consider but based on your current intended use for the truck the 2.7 is more than adequate and IIRC it's the base engine for the lariat so it won't cost extra. If you plan on keeping it for a long time then you should probably weigh what your needs are now vs what they might be in the future and take that into consideration. As far as 'pep' goes I have a feeling you're not going to be disappointed with the 2.7, 3.5, or 5.0 (can't comment on the diesel as I have not driven one). Honestly I think you're going to be surprised. My previous truck was an 06 4.7 v8 Dakota so it came from the same era with similar power specs and the difference between trucks from that time period and now is night and day.

PS- just a heads up if you plan on hanging around on the forum, if you make a thread asking for advice on engine choice expect the following... complete disregard of the question/scenario presented > thread derailment in less than 10 posts > hypotheticals > bickering > thread continuing in perpetuity with complete disregard to the question/scenario presented

Not saying that's how it should be but for some reason it's how it is

Raise your hand if you bought your 5.0 based purely on the sound.
No one...? That's what I thought!

The only reason to get the 2.7 is if you can't afford a better engine. I can't imagine anyone with a better engine saying, "Damn, I sure wish I had gotten a lower engine!". But the other way around I suspect is different. Of course those with the lower engine will try to justify them 10 ways from Sunday but no one needs to justify the V8 or 3.5EB. Once you start hearing about the "wonderfully" better "gas mileage" they get you know they have hit rock bottom. If you are looking for better gas mileage, get a Hyundai!

The 2.7 is the fuel economy engine, the 5.0 is an upgrade for sure. I remember my salesman explaining this to me at the dealer when they were getting rid of the ranger, although I already understood it. More people are driving full size trucks who don’t need them, they just want to look cool and have a truck, normally this sect would be driving a car or midsize truck (Ranger, Tacoma, etc). But when the economy is good and gas is cheap people buy trucks, but half of these buyers drop like flies as soon as gas goes up throughout the cycles. The 2.7 offers decent power without compromised fuel economy for a daily driver truck, it fills the void of the mid size truck. I agree completely a truck isn’t the purchase to make for fuel economy, poor point. I would have never chosen a gen 1 EcoBoost over the 6.2L Boss V8, it’s a better engine than the 3.5 in every way. More power, cheaper to maintain, better longevity, better engine braking, better sound, the list goes on and on. The only category it loses is in fuel economy, but that’s not why I bought the truck. I’ll drive a car if I want fuel economy, love my V8! The new 5.0 is impressive, and will be my choice when I get another F-150.

No hate to the ecoboost owners either, because they like theirs! It’s good Ford offers something for everyone, although they do need a larger displacement V8 back in the lineup. As someone said so wisely in this thread “it’s like asking someone what beer is best”....so TRUE! Depends what you want.
