Default What is the difference between these 2 rear ends?

Happen to notice there are 2 different shapes in rear ends on the F150... at first I thought maybe it was a gear ratio thing but I saw each shape in all 3 gear ratios. next I thought it was E locker but again both types can be found in conventional and e locker. Anyone know?

There are two different size rear ends available, an 8.8 and a 9.75.

I think the 9.75 rear (top picture) is only in 3.73 gearing. The 8.8 (bottom picture) is 3.31 and 3.55 gearing

The Left is the 9.75" which is available to the 2.7L Ecoboost and 5.0L in 3.73 ratio only, and available in all ratios to the 3.5L Ecoboost, and is not available at all to the 3.5L normally aspirated engine.

A shame that the better, stronger, bigger rear end that's needed for maximum towing is limited to only the 3.73 gears on the 5.0L as many I know will not own a smaller V6 turbo charged engine in a truck. If that 3.55 ratio 9.75" rear end were available on the 5.0L, it would take the tow capacity up another 1000 lbs or greater.

The non-symetrical covered one (left) is on my 3.5 NA with 3.7.3 gears though.

Count the number of bolts. 9.75" cover has 12 bolts. 8.8" has 10 bolts.

Man, Ford's making it more complicated than my feeble mind can handle!
