Hi, I recently purchased a lease returned 2018 F150. Pretty much right behind the rear tires on both sides there is a but stud or bolt and some rust around it. I am thinking maybe crappy install of some wheel arch protectors maybe? Also any idea on what I should do about the rust? Thank you so much!!
At first glance I'd say air bags, probably Firestone Ride Rite. But they don't bolt up in that frame hole if I remember right. Perhaps something not Firestone/Air Lift that bolts up in that location?
I can buy the past air bags idea... Not everything lines up perfectly with that firestone kit you referenced. Now I am more focused on cleaning and protecting the "special area" that got a couple grand knocked off the price.

Yes, those are a match for the pictures the other member took.
That's the location where the firestone air bag kit mounts. A previous owner buying the wrong used kit and making it work would explain the drilled out lower hole.
Are there small holes by the license plate? That's where you put the fill valves if not adding a compressor.
I would bet that I already saw a post in this forum asking the same question with the same pictures...
I guess the other guy did not buy the truck for that reason.
Impressive memory and thank you for the response! I narrowed my search terms and found the last thread. It's the same truck from that thread. OP passed on it, and they cut the price buy a pretty fair bit. It passed an extended warranty inspection, that I am now thinking about purchasing lol.

Nope no holes, and the leaf springs don't have any clamp marks. Also the paint in the hitch receiver looks to never have been touched. So why air bag I have no idea, but it does seem to be the most rational idea.

Towing is not the only need for air bags. Placing weight in the bed of the truck would cause the rear of the truck to squat. Air bags could have been the answer to raising the rear of the truck back to it's proper height for driving.

So I've had some time to poke around this morning. He was goose neck or 5th wheel towing. The 1820 pounds of payload capacity didn't cut it. Now it's time to learn how to protect the frame where its rusted.

Thank you 😊
So you've got a hole / holes in the bed as well then, I assume?
1820 is actually pretty decent! Much better than my 1530, lol.
