weird steering
2018 f150 lariat supercrew 5.0l,.. I just got this truck with 35K and getting used to all the techy stuff, my concern is every so often it seems like steering catches on something, it's like either real tight tie rod end or missing tooth on rack where it takes more effort to move steering wheel, it is a small amount to move back, could it be the lane sensor trying to keep it in the center of lane? or really is a bad rack and pinion? Anyone have had this happen? It's not enough to cause an accident just very annoying.
If you have the lanekeeping assist, have it turned on, and you try to cross a lane marker without first turning on your turn signal, the steering will gently resist going over the line and you can feel that resistance in the steering wheel. That's what it is supposed to do.
The issue you're experiencing with your 2018 F-150 Lariat's steering feeling like it catches could be related to various factors. While it's possible that the lane-keeping assist system could momentarily affect steering resistance, it's also essential to rule out mechanical issues like a tight tie rod end or a problem with the rack and pinion. To diagnose the problem accurately, it's best to have a qualified mechanic inspect the steering components and check for any error codes or issues with the vehicle's electronic systems to determine if it's a software-related or mechanical issue causing the annoyance. Ford has a series of videos on Youtube that show how various features work. Unfortunately they no longer have the videos for your model year posted, but they still have 2021 up and most of the features work in a similar manner. https://www.ford.com/support/vehicle...video-library/
This video is more generic (not F150) but it explains exactly how the lane-keeping aid works and how to adjust its settings in the instument panel menu.
