Default Waze weirdness on Sync3 and iPhone

So I was using Waze to navigate today on my iPhone. The audio directions cut off the radio that was playing, as expected, and when done returned to audio to the radio.

What was weird was every time there was a navigation direction given, the 8" screen showed making a phone call to the cell number of my iPhone that was running the Waze app. As soon as the direction was finished the 8" screen returned to the Sync screen.

Ain't technology great?

Default HFP prompts

This is normal behavior. The iPhone and your truck are using what's known as "Hands Free Profile" (HFP). From Apple's website:

Hands-free profile (HFP) allows navigation prompts to play through your car speakers when iPhone isn't selected as the audio source. When you pair your iPhone with Bluetooth, HFP turns on by default.
In other words, you can't listen to 2 sources at the same time (radio and Bluetooth audio navigation). To get around this, the phone basically makes a call to your head unit to deliver the navigation audio, then hangs up.

That explains it.

But today is the first time I have seen the behavior and I have been using Waze for some time now.

Get into the Waze settings (Gear Icon), and under the "Advanced Settings" heading, tap Sound & Voice". Then "Sound Output", then change it to "device default". That should make it play over the regular bluetooth audio. I'll post a pic in a second.

Wouldn't this play Waze audio if and only if the source is set to Bluetooth?

I'll have to play with the settings some more and see if I can get audio without the display doing the outgoing call on the display. Maybe if it is set to not mute audio.. IDK.

As was stated earlier... that's normal. I use Waze in rental cars of all brands, and that's how Waze does audio prompts. Not just Waze... other apps as well.

My wife's phone does the same thing. I either use mine plugged in and the CarPlay app or before I had that, my old gps unit.

Change it to the play on phone speaker option and you'll hear it on the phone. It will only play on the vehicle speakers if you're listing to bluetooth audio from your phone unless you change it back to Play as Bluetooth audio call, which is annoying.
