Default Valve Chatter

I have an 18 with the 5.0. Have close to 6k on it now. Since day one under certain circumstances the valves would chatter prior to it shifting. For the past month it has gotten worse. I first thought it may be bad gas so i ran a tank of 93 through it. It did help some but is still aggravating. I am going to take it in as soon as i am ready to deal with the dealer's bull.. I hate dealing with the dealer. Why do most dealers have to be a pain?? Has anyone else had this issue? Hoping it is a simple programming issue.

Well i took the truck to the dealer on Monday. They called me today and said the tech can defiantly hear the valve noise. Told me they have tried several things per Ford but nothing has worked. Said they are awaiting a call from the Ford engineer as to how to proceed next. The funny part is, the truck they gave me as a loaner (from Enterprise) has the exact drive train as mine and is making the same noise!! Just wondering how many others the valves are rattling in with the 5.0.The service manager said that although the 5.0 has been around a while, 2018 is a new design. Said the engine has had quite a bit of updating. I have searched the net and can really not find anyone that is having the same issues.

Keep us updates as you hear more. There are others with the same issue so we'd be glad to know if there is a fix for this.

Mine definitely does it. It is aggravating but not a deal breaker ..

I have been doing a lot of research and spoke to the folks at 5star tuning. They have assured me that they can get it out of the truck with a custom tune as well as a few other issues such as the way the 10 speed shifts etc. They said they are aware of the valve noise and it is an issue with the timing. I really hate to put a tuner on a brand new truck. I am going to see what the dealer says after talking to Ford. It really chaps me to think i need to spend 600.00 on a tuner to fix a 60,000 truck that has 5k miles on it. Heck i already had to spend 150.00 on a throttle body spacer to fix the annoying whistle. I really hate dealing with the dealer and people that have no idea what there doing. It's usually easier to just fix the damn thing myself and avoid the headache.

If you paid $60,000 for your truck, that is a bigger problem.

It still bothers me a little but now that I know they all do it I don't stress too much about it. My 16 5.0 was flawless so it does make you wonder exactly what was changed. I bought a 5 year 150k esp on this one so I'm covered, drive more worry less...

It was an exaggeration. But with taxes and all it was close to it.

Yes i agree. This truck does act and drive differently than the ones before it. I am fine with that. The only thing with mine is, it has gotten much worse. It wasn't bad for the first few thousand miles. A little clatter when lugging it just prior to a shift but now it is much louder and more pronounced.

After a week at the dealer they have came to a conclusion. The engineer at Ford states that the 5.0 engine is a " High Performance Engine" that they recommend the use of fuel with at least a 91 octane rating. They also stated that this information is in the owners manual. Sure as S*** it is. It says that the higher octane fuel is not required but recommended. They also stated that most stations are now carrying a "winter blend" and the quality is less thus leading to detonation. They assured me that running a higher octane fuel would stop the valve chatter. The part that really ticks me off is, i did not know that i was buying a truck that required a premium fuel to keep the valves quite. They were however nice enough to fill my tank completely full with premium gas. They also done some programming as well. I will say, i have only drove it about 50 miles since getting it back but it does sound much quieter. I will try to post the document from Ford tomorrow. When i was there picking my truck up, there was also another guy there with an 18 just like mine that was in for the exact same reason.
