Default Update maps without driving

I purchased the usb map update. Can it be installed by leaving the ignition on and the engine off? I have a 4 amp battery tender I could hook up. If this is not enough amps to maintain the battery I also have a 10 amp manual charger.

I'm pretty sure it needs to be running, or things will timeout after 10-15 min. (I recalled seeing that on a sync update thread). Hopefully you didn't pay much for update, I'm pretty sure they are free on CyanLabs website. Good luck

It implies to have the truck running but does not say it can’t be done with the ignition on. Thought I would ask if anyone did update it without the engine running.
I did purchase it from Ford and it cost $154 with shipping.

The reason Ford wants you to have the engine running is to:
  1. Ensure a good voltage level is always being delivered to the modules while the programming is taking place, and to
  2. Ensure the power does not time out and shut off during the programming.

Then I’d leave the engine running.

If you leave it running there is a good chance the auto engine idle shutdown AEIS (not the same as stop/start) will kick in and cancel the update near the end. I'm sorry you purchased the USB stick, the files are openly on this website for distribution. You can either 1: disable AEIS with ForScan beforehand or 2: babysit the update progress to press the steering wheel when it prompts you to keep the engine running.

I would leave it running during the update since the BCM would try to sleep the APIM midway through the update even if the system is on a battery tender.
