Well, if you ask corporate for a buyback, they’ll drag their feet, ask for extra consumption tests, then they’ll charge you mileage despite them asking for extra consumption tests.

And if you get a lemon law lawyer involved, expect to drag it out 18 months or more.

Default Update

It has been about a month and 1000 miles since I got this tsb performed. Do note the dealer added 5w30 instead of 5w20. I checked the new dipstick today and to my surprise the oil was still right below the top hash mark. The oil went down maybe 1/8th of an inch. Before this tsb was done I would have seen atleast a quarter inch of loss in 1000 miles. It may still consume a little but it is no where near what it was. I'm happy overall.

You are now the 3rd person I've read about getting 5W30 in place of 5W20 in relation to the TSB.

Going all in on the 5w30. Got about 1500 miles til its time though. Rockauto.com was fast with the shipping.

I've already made up my mind to make the switch.

My oil consumption on my 5.0 was all about valve guides leaking oil down into two cylinders on each bank. It was the intake valves that were leaking. It would be fairly easy to see if this is your problem by pulling the spark plugs and inspecting them. Oil fouled plugs would point to the leaky cylinder valves. A borescope would also show oil fouling in the heads if you have this problem. My 5.0 was using 1 qt/2200 miles or so, sometimes more. Ford replaced the heads on warranty at 31,000 miles. The head replacement was botched however and I ended up with a factory new 5.0 installed in February. I am pleased with my new engine as it is strong, quiet and doesn't seem to be consuming any oil at all. Another clue to having oil fouling is a rough idle at cold startup indicating misfire.

says right in the manual in my glove box for my 2018 ford f150 5L that you can use 10w/30 for extreme use. I don’t know what extreme use is but that tells me you can use different oil right there. Hope this helps

I would be interested in knowing exactly where you see a spec of "10w/30" for extreme use? I checked my book for the 2018 5.0 and it shows only 5w20 for US,CAN and MEX. This is on pg. 440 and 443. It does show using 0w20 as an alternative oil for extremely cold climates where temps reach -22F or below(pg. 443). My book is "October 2017 Second Printing."
