Default Triggering Google Assistant Via "Hey Google" when connected to sync?

Anyone have this working? I'm an android guy and would love to be able to trigger the voice commands of google assistant while connected to my truck (sync 1, in process of upgrading to sync2/mft) but the "Hey Google" command does not seem to kick it off. Even if I had to hit a button to trigger the listen (or even just have the phone then listen for the direct command) that would be ideal. Main use to setting reminders and notes that I think about while driving, but also calls/texts/directions commands as well.

Anyone, bueller?

On 2018 Sync 3 once connected Android Auto you can use the steering wheel button and it will trigger the google voice commands.

I have Sync 2 and if I recall correctly it WILL work but only when you are streaming audio from your phone via bluetooth

Works fine in my truck without pushing any buttons. When your phone is disconnected from the truck, does "Ok Google" work? When it's in the truck, where is the phone? I think the wake phrase is heard by your phone, and once active, the truck microphone listens. So if the phone can't "hear" you, it won't work.

Another thought. I have a Google pixel. If you look on the compatibility list for the system, the pixel is NOT AppLink compatible. I'm curious if that has anything to do with it.

Sometimes "OK GOOGLE" doesn't respond and the phone needs power cycled.

I also use my phone commands because the sync system understands about as much English as as someone from india.

pixel 2 xl. So far it does not respond to commands when linked via bluetooth to the truck, but it does just fine sitting here at my desk. I will have to play around with it some more, but so far "hey google" does not initiate the command listen. I think it may have something to do with the mic being transferred to the Sync system's mic and that one not being "always listening" as the phone itself is.

Ok, so a little misunderstanding then. The only time I use "ok google" is when I'm connected via AndroidAuto. Otherwise, it's in my pocket and honestly I've never tried. I'll try it on my way home from work tonight without connecting to AA.

So, with my phone connected via BT, it recognizes command phrases and if I make a call activates the hands free. I'm assuming if I had a music player and selected BT as the source, that would work too.

Google assistant doesn't give me voice feedback no matter what, so I guess I'm lost on what you're looking for.
