Trailer Towing
Don’t know if anyone on here has run into this. I have to bring my son’s Jeep to him in Savanna,Ga, distance of about 1890 miles. I called U Haul to rent a vehicle trailer, they took the information about the vehicle I am hauling and my tow vehicle. The 2006 Jeep Wrangler Unlimited weighs 3694 lbs, the U Haul trailer weighs 2100 lbs, for a grand total of 5794 lbs. U Haul tells me that the curb weight of my F150 Super Crew is 3175 Lbs.....Told the no it’s not it’s, 7000 lbs and it has the Max Tow package. They proceed to tell me it’s not the engine horsepower but the weight of the vehicle and, according to U Haul, my truck, an F150 Lariat Super Crew 4x4 cannot tow/stop a trailer/weight combination weighing 5794 lbs........I went in person to show them the weight information on the door post, showed them the Ford F-150 sales brochure with with the trailer tow information in it. I even told the the 3175 number is the weight in Kilograms. Did the conversion on my phone for the guy at the counter and showed it to him 3175 converts to 7000 lbs. They did not want to hear any of it......at all. Anyone ever run into this?

Tell them you're going to put a vintage VW Bug on the trailer.

Their computer said the same thing about my similar-weight first-gen XTerra being towed behind my F-150, and the local third-party UHaul rep said, "Gee, I must have misheard you about your F-two-50," and changed the info in the computer...but if you go that route (or tell them you're going to tow a Geo Metro or vintage bug or such), keep in mind that you may be assuming additional liability if things go pear-shaped.

so how much weight can our trucks tow? I thought they were capable of towing well over 7,000lbs. My truck doesn't have the max tow package but it has the regular towing package that I think was like a $1,000 add on. came with the integrated break controller etc

Where does it say you need a WDH above 5k? I thought that you just needed a frame mounted hitch. 5k being the bumper limit. If you're tongue weight is well balanced and your load isn't 7' in the air (so it all rolls forward in braking) you should be fine?

Where does it say you need a WDH (what a misnomer) above 5k?

Huh - My 17 guide doesn't break out the WDH threshold, just that the max rating MAY require it. The guide says tongue weight as <10% vs trailer load. Also says 5k Max on the bumper.
