Default Trailer brake controller

I recently bought a 2017 F150 F150 crew cab and it came with a brake controller in the glove box. I installed it and activated it with forscan. Every since installing the truck automatically goes to the trailer brake screen and I have to toggle back to the normal display. I set the gain to 6.0 and it stops the truck fine after reaching 25mph. When the trailer is connected or feels like the brakes don't kick in till you're almost stopped then it slams on the brakes. It keeps saying "trailer disconnected" wether the trailer is connected or not. I'm thinking it's a faulty controller. Any thoughts?

Hmmm...I wonder if that is why it was in the glove box and not installed? Is it a genuine Ford product? Countless threads on here about aftermarket units from eBay, Amazone, etc that LOOK good but simply have nothing but issues.

Is the TBC installed in dash or mounted outside on dash? I agree with bajaman, if it's likely a junk controller.

I have 2018 150, and installed the Ford unit, and Dealership integrated it. I had some issues initially, but after adding the trailer ID, and setting the backup assist then enabling the trailer functions in the drive mode screen all those no trailer connected messages cleared up and the system works perfectly. I don’t use the backup assist, way too sensitive to inputs. Not sure what trailer programming is in the 17s, but maybe this might help.

It was a ford oem in dash controller that apparently went bad. I bought a $25 aftermarket one and it fixed the problems.
