Question Tire pressure sensor system

My 2016 XLT suddenly is showing a pressure sensor fault. Both wheels on the drivers side show no readings for their tpms units. Discount Tires was unable to reset them. Either the units are faulty (both tires at the same time?) or something has failed in the sensor receiver system. My question is does the sensor system split reading between vehicle sides or is it a single receiver/

The sensor signals are received by the RTM (Radio Transceiver Module) mounted in the roof near the CHMSL. If only two are not working, then it is the sensors that are the problems. The TPMS sensors are powered by batteries that have a 5-10 year life expectancy depending on vehicle use. It looks like it is time to replace all 4 sensors.

thank you, that is what needed to know. Sensors are 5 years old so I’ll get them all changed out.

Discount Tire should have read the battery status from your functioning sensors. The Autel TS-508 I have does. Also reads tire temperature.

Does anyone know if the tire sensors go dormant (turn off) when the truck is not moving? Would a "less driven" truck's sensors last longer (more months/years) than a truck driven daily and for longer trips? My regular wheels and tires get replaced by snow tires on their own wheels for 5 or so months of the year.

Yes, after approximately 30 min the sensors go into a sleep mode to conserve battery life.

Something I have ben curious about..... When tires are rotated how do the sensors know what position the tire is in? Did the tech have to reset something?

Truck knows where each wheel is. May take a couple minutes but it does.

I recommend www.tpms.com for replacement sensors. The EZ-Sensor costs $27/sensor. Discount Tire uses the same one and charges $60/sensor. The sensors are programmed for your truck when they arrive in the mail. I purchased new tires at Discount Tire and had them install the new sensors.
