Default Teach me something about exhausts please

Why did my 2017 F150 Ecoboost come with single exhaust yet the Ecoboost Raptors have duals? Along the same lines, why are all the aftermarket exhaust single/split even the aftermarket downpipes go into y's, but the Raptors are duals for the most part? If I understand this right after reading up a little, the downpipes from Raptors can fit behind the turbos on regular F150's so why do all the downpipes seem to merge into one before the catbacks on regular F150's, is there a good reason/design for this? Just curious, thanks.

The 3.5L EcoBoost in the Raptor is a High Output. The duals are to handle the increased airflow and decrease backpressure.

Because one pipe is enough to handle the amount of air leaving the combustion chamber. Thus, it wouldn’t be cost effective to put two pipes on.
On the Raptor, while one exhaust pipe would probably work as well (we don’t know because we aren’t the engineers that calculated the amount of air leaving the combustion chamber on the Raptor’s HO Ecoboost) although we can assume that one would have been fine. On the Raptor, however, cost wasn’t an issue - so they put two on, and the Raptor customer doesn’t care about paying extra for it.

I think we can make an informed opinion/educated guess based on the results of tuning on the regular 3.5 liter and no other modifications, that there was no compelling need for doubling up

Raptor probably needed the extra flow...and it costs a lot more to put duals on every Ecoboost truck, especially considering most people don't care. Running a single exhaust saves money.

The Raptor does not put out enough power to warrant the piping. Even if it did, we only need a single pipe in the right size. Dual exhaust is all about perception. People associate dual exhaust with power, so the Raptor gets it, because that helps to sell more Raptors.

So associated with power are duals that when we run the two banks together (H -or- X pipe, or combined flow muffler, because you get better scavenging and generate more power), we separate them again, because two pipes ending at the rear of the vehicle drives that perception of power.

Technically, a truck like the Raptor is carrying extra dead weight by having dual exhaust. but in our minds, it's so necessary!

Maybe they should have went with 1 and increased the amount of piped in exhaust noise? LOL

The reason is cost and to a much lesser extent noise. Definitely not flow.

Noise is dealt with by them changing the diameter of the piping in multiple places as it exits the vehicle along with using very restrictive mufflers and a large resonator.

The raptor is a performance oriented version and thus comes with true dual exhaust that is louder. The HO and regular 3.5 ecoboost would make the same power with either exhaust on them.
