Talk me into it or out of it

I’m a new 3.5L owner (sorry I can’t help with the 2.7L) who also traded in a 5.7L ram for it. Just make sure you check that yellow door sticker for the payload. I loved my ram but it only had a 1260lb payload and my 4K pop up maxed it out. When looking at the F-150 I was surprised at just how much payload differed from truck to truck. I seen them everywhere from 1300 to 2000 and literally everything in between with what seemed like no rhyme or reason why.

Only consider a 2.7L if it has the 2.7L payload package. This specs it out to have the same components as the 3.5 and 5.0 regular tow vehicles.
you will find it more sluggish than the 3.5. It will have ample power for 3,000lbs. You will find the newer f150 have a fair amount of squat.

2018 2.7 crew with 3.55 gears.I pull a 21’ ski boat and a 10x20 enclosed trailer usually with a car inside and I can’t feel either one behind. I had a 2015 5.0 screw and it struggled to pull the enclosed trailer, could be that it had 3.33 gears. Who knows but this 2.7 is something else. You will have no issues pulling that pop up.

Ive driven them all. Its hard because I have been driving almost an hour to the dealerships to drive them and even if I had one local, I don't think id have enough time to go home and hook the camper up to see how it pulls. I like all 3, just as ive stated, just seems like id get more for my money going with the 2.7 EB.

I have a 2.7 that I use every weekend in the summer to tow my Jetskis to the water. The trailer and both skis weigh right at 2,000 pounds. Add 20 gallons of gas in the extra gas cans on the trailer, and fill the bed with all the accessories. 2 coolers full of ice and food, towables, chairs, awning, small BBQ, and I'm easily over 3,000 pounds. And I do it at 6,000 feet altitude. It tows just fine, and I go up into the mountains hauling that load. Even at 9,000 feet, it pulls fine. I used to pull a 24 ft travel trailer with my last truck which had a 3.5 Ecoboost, and I could pull up to the Eisenhower tunnel (11,400 ft) at 70, with more available if I needed it, while my friend in his RAM with the 5.7 could only hit 50 up the same hill. The Ecoboosts are GREAT engines. In my mind it comes down to which truck gets you the bells and whistles you want and fits your budget. If you plan on upgrading to a bigger trailer, I'd probably consider the 3.5 or the 5.0 though.

Also as noted by others, make sure you check the rear axle and gear ratio. It is possible to get the 9.75" rear with 3.73 gears like I have with the 2.7 Eco. Even with 34" tires, I have no doubt my truck can tow what I need it to. I found a truck I liked and confirmed the axle code on the door jam when I went to look at it. When i found out it had 3.73 and the big rear end I was sold.

I went from a 2012 3.5L Eco to a 2018 2.7L Eco. I mainly went with the 2.7 because I didn't do that much towing and like you I could get more for my money and I liked the improved gas mileage of the 2.7L. When I compared the numbers of my 2012 and 2018 torque stayed about the same and hp went down a little, but nothing significant. My towing went down from about 10,000 with the 2012 to 7,600 with the 2018. I did make sure I got the towing package and trailer brake controller on the 2018 for the day I might need it. A few months after getting my new truck we decided to get a 4,500lb camper. I'm very impressed with the way the 2.7L handles it, even bucking 30mph winds in a rain storm, I couldn't complain with how it handled. Go for the 2.7, for what you need it will be just fine.

Here's my rig....just shy of 5000lbs. Typically get 15-18 mpg on a variety of road types. IMO, there is not a better light duty (<7000lbs/low aero) tow rig. The 2.7/10AT combo is a beast.
You will not find a better combination of power(torque) & efficiency. Period.
