Default Tailgate won’t lock

Starting a few days ago I can’t get my tailgate to lock. I have a 2016 crew lariat. Any ideas?

When you're testing if it locked, you don't have the key in your pocket right? If the key is in your pocket/near the truck it will unlock and drop the tailgate.

I’ve tried it without the fob on me at all and just using the lock buttons on the door. I don’t hear it even trying to lock. I always remembered it being kinda loud when it would lock before

The electric tailgate motor doesn't lock, like the doors; it just doesn't pop open if fob is not around when truck is locked. Try opening it without the fob near and truck locked, and it shouldn't open.

I figured you probably had, but wanted to ask the "obvious" first because we're all human and don't think about everything. Lol. I've done my fair share of that.

For troubleshooting, pull the access panel off the inside of the tailgate and look for anything unplugged. If you can, stand by the tailgate with the panel off and have someone else push lock so you can see if anything is happening.

Just to be clear, you've tried opening the tailgate after locking the truck without the fob right? I just want to make 100% that it's not based solely off of hearing vs not hearing since any number of things could affect how audible that actuator is.

Well I just went out and tried it with no fob and it was locked. Either I’ve lost my mind or the spare key fob that is hanging just inside my house from the garage is a little too close. I just started parking back in there since the boat is out now. Never remember that happening before. Thanks all!

At least that's all it was! Glad it was an easy "fix" lol

Hi, WD-40 and no luck. Started truck and unlocked the doors and nothing happened to the tailgate. question, is the tailgate chipped/electronic controlled? This is a basic 2013 XL and assumed it has just a traditional lock with no electronics (could be wrong. never locked the tailgate and did it for the 1st time.) Is there a good site to load my VIN and find out the truck build/options? thanks
