Default Tailgate step button sticks

The last few time I've used my tailgate step the release button has been sticking in, not coming back out all the way. Then the step won't latch in the closed position. Thought I would check to see if it's a common problem or if anyone has fixed a similar problem. Needs some lube? Broken spring? 2018 truck.

The spring can get cocked to one side and then it binds or just doesn't work. To get at the spring, pull the handle post out as you normally would.

Once you have it in the fully extended position, depress the "1" button again while pulling up on the upper section until the "1" button shows above the lower section. It should stop there. Then there are 4 retainer tabs (one shown by the arrow) that need to be depressed slightly to release the cap on the lower section.

Pulling up slightly while you depress the tabs will release the cap and you can pull the upper section out of the lower section.

The spring should be attached to the bottom of the upper section as shown above. If it has come loose you may need to fish it out of the pocket where the handle retreacts.

All I had to do was reposition the spring into its holder on the bottom of the upper section and then, when stowed, the button would pop back up into its normal stowed position and allow the step to be latched.

The release button on my 2020 Lariat tailgate was sticking last year. I sprayed some lube on it (can’t remember which type of lube) and it has not been sticking since.
