Default tailgate mat upgrade

I have the topper. I have the rubber mat. But didnt have a decent tailgate mat to prevent scratches, set my fishing rods or tackle on, sit on comfortably, provide some grip for my dog when jumping in or out, that was light weight, etc.

Below is my solution...
materials:
box of super adhesive Velcro from Home Depot
trunk carpet from Princess Auto.

Total cost under 40 bucks.

Directions:
Measure between indents for tailgate latches about 5' exactly. Then cut it 51.5cm tall. When tailgate is closed, the bottom edge just closes below the top of the rubber mat. Sorry for mixing the dimensions.

Cut using a long level as a straight edge on garage floor and sharp carpet knife.
Place the center strips and top row of Velcro on the tailgate ( I have the step).
Then place Velcro strips down the sides and across the bottom of the carpet (I installed material upside down as one side is fuzzier than other)
Position onto the tailgate and align perfectly.
After your satisfied with the position, carefully remove the backing tape from the pieces you attached to the carpet before you set it down. This way you wont have any exposed Velcro sticking out.

*To get the top row of velcro the right length, just place it on the piece before assembly so you can cut to fit. Then remove and apply centered to tailgate.

Looks like you did a good job on it. Never even crossed my mine on a DIY for it. I just
installed a Bedrug tailgate mat on mine, not much more money and mine probably
wouldn't have looked as good as yours. LOL

The tailgate mat has been working great. No visible wear and tear. Seen its fair share of use. Still in place and on its third winter. Currently -31C outside right now if your wondering. Its nice to sit on and does a great job locating my fishing gear etc when out on the ice.

Anyone else give it or something similar a try?

You should have extended the mat 6 inches further down and tucked the end under the bed mat.

I have the factory drop in liner and I put a rectangular piece of rubber matting under the tailgate cover that extends under down across the gap and under the bed liner itself. It helps keep crap from dropping down the gap and into the drain and access holes in the tailgate as well.

No pics since it's winter right now.
