Default Tailgate latch

I have a new-to-me 2020 XLT Sport. I bought it with 16k miles, and it's in just about brand new condition.
When I unlatch the tailgate the handle stays in the out position. In other words it doesn't spring back. When I close the tailgate I have to push the handle back to the latch position.
I've owned several trucks, including some F150s but I've never seen this.
I lubed the latch to no avail.
I'm wondering if this is normal.

Welcome.

Probably needs some lubricatin'. Remove the inner tailgate access panel. Grab your favorite spray lubricant and spray the handle mechanism and latch and unlatch the handle several times. Lube the tailgate latches while you're at it.

More info in here.

Will do, thanks.
Wasn't sure if it was some weird new feature.

I would think that there is a spring to pull the handle back into position as well as extend the latches to reengage. If you know a body man that knows Fords, you might ask about that, or do some disassembling to eyeball it. With the low miles you have I would doubt that the latch would be bound up unless it was exposed to lots of grit etc. Or damage. Now is as good a time as any to really get to know your F-150!

Dust from gravel roads gets in the mechanism and jams up the return. Best solution is to pull the panel off the inside of tailgate and clean the mechanism. Avoid getting electricsl connectors or the backup cam wet. Use a dry lube after the cleanup. Anyone have a favorite brand?
