The cheapest I found the motorcraft part was 1050 after taxes and shipping and was planning to do it myself and just pay for alignment and computer flashing after I installed however I just got a quote from a reputable shop here in town they want 1600 to do the whole job so I think I’m gonna go ahead and do that. After the cost of the part 100 for alignment and 150 to flash the computer the 2-300 extra to have a shop do it and save myself the aggravation might be worth it. Just drop it off and pick it up after it’s all done.
My 2017 was an XLT and they all have the EPAS since at least 2015, maybe even before, AFAIK. Luckily my truck only had about 15K miles on it at the time, so it was covered under warranty. I sure wouldn't want to attempt to replace it myself.

Losing steering is serious stuff. Something like that should be warranted for life.

I just have one question: Can you force steer your truck to safety? Is the steering wheel physically connected to the rack to do so?

it’s definitely serious stuff and I didn’t think I’d be dealing with it at 53k miles on a certified Ford vehicle. I personally have not had any situation where I felt unsafe although it has made it uncomfortable to drive and worrisome in that aspect. I do believe there’s a mechanical back up that acts as a safety if the electronic parts fail.
