My tailgate locks in this scenario. The fob is in the tray of the center console.

If I leave the fob in the truck and try to lock it using the button on the door, it honks twice when I shut the door and they remain unlocked.

I'll try with the fob in the door pocket.. This is interesting trying to figure out how this system works.

I know this is a very old thread, but was this ever figured out? May be another thread? I just discovered this after having the truck for three years. I always leave my FOB in the truck. What is the trick to be able to leave FOB in truck and NOT have tailgate be unlocked?

And that seems to reliably ensure the tailgate stays locked? Did keeping it in metal box IN console not work?

Is this your primary fob or your hidden away fob? If hidden, I would just remove the battery and hide it separate from the fob. If it is your primary, I simply would not leave it in the truck period.

Wrap aluminum foil around the key fob; works for me.

I just tested my '18 Lariat
With key fob in your pocket or a long way away:
7-8 and 9-0 locks all doors and tailgate.
Use of the security code and all doors and tailgate unlock.

With the key fob in your pocket all touch features are active. Even if the doors are locked the tailgate touch feature will be active.

With key fob a long way from the truck:
The touch feature for the doors and tailgate is defeated or not active.
Use security code and all doors and tailgate unlock.

With the key fob in either of the Ford inside the security locations the door and tailgate touch features are disabled, and use of the security code is required to get inside per above.
There are two key fob security locations inside the truck
1) In the bottom of the forward cup holder
2) In the slot below the hinge in the console
Test it yourself and get the same result as I did.
Refer to the owners manual on pages 71 and 79

If you do not use Ford's security location then you need to have an RFID pouch for you key fob. Totally unnecessary. Just put the key fob where Ford says to put it.

And all this time I thought that the “security locations” was where you put the fob if the batteries were dead so you could start the truck or to program a new fob. Or to allow for breaking a window getting in and driving the truck away.
Must be my old 2015 isn’t as smart as the newer ones..

That was the equivalent of a mic drop. Ha ha. But very helpful. I need to read the manual again to see if location #1 is the same for starting truck with fob battery dead, or if my truck has an additional slot for that inside the forward tray. But hey, at least if it doesn't work with #1, I know the other location will. And if all fails, the manual is always there. Ha ha.
