Default Should i wait on the 10 speed or go ahead and buy a 16'?

Howdy folks, new member of the forum and long time gear head since I got my first Ford at 16 years old. So here's my dilemma; I just bought a new Harley and need a truck to haul it in when I get home from overseas to move with my wife. I LOVE the new F150's, and me and the wife decided that's the truck we want (V8, 4x4), and we want to keep it til the day we die. Only problem is, I hear the ten speed will soon be standard on all F150's (is this even true?), and they currently have the six. Is it worth waiting on the ten speed? Will I be happier with less gears in an automatic? Will I regret not waiting for the new tranny to come out and I'm stuck here with my little ol' six speed? Having an automatic truck in the first place is gunna be hard enough for me to get used to, but hey what're ya gunna do... The only hauling I'll be doing is with my Harley, and it'll be our daily driver. Any thoughts? Thanks in advance.

I think a 10 speed transmission in a light truck is a solution in search of a problem. In my (never) humble opinion we ran out of "need" at about 5 gears. The six is a nice transmission, we had one in the Expedition and I liked it, but that certainly is plenty of torque divisions. The billion speed transmission is a marketing stunt. It seems to me it would spend an awful lot of time fishing through all those closely spaced gears. I would also be very hesitant to be an early buyer. I've unwittingly done enough beta testing for the auto industry and now try to stay away from any major first year innovations. If you're ready to buy a new truck, I'd do it now. The current powertrain is solid and proven, and the trucks are outstanding from a features / comfort standpoint.

This.

I have driven the 8 speed in the Dodge and its nice but it does feel like its always shifting.

Ride the Harley. Don't haul it.

The 6 speed seems solid to me. Unless the 10 speed will do wonders for gas mileage, I'm not sure it's worth waiting for.

Oh trust me I will haha. The reason I'm hauling it is because I'm picking up the bike and truck in Kentucky, and my wife doesn't have loads of driving experience... So I felt it would be safest to haul it and have me drive. But maybe it'll work out if we play smoky and the bandit. Anyways, it seems the six will be excellent according to the majority of you guys. This'll be my first automatic, I can't imagine how annoying ten gears would be.

The 6 speed is a very, very, stout transmission. The 10 may be as well.

Key word, may.

I wouldn't get the 10 speed til it's been out for at least 2-3 years. As far as the current 6 speed, it's great. I never feel like I'm "in between" gears. When towing anything significant, I'll lock out 6th if I'm staying below 55mph and the truck always feels peppy.
