Thank you, I will check those out as well.

I figured the videos would be kinda generic and would most likely cover a lot of stuff that won’t apply to every vehicle.

Just out of curiosity has anyone tried to plug in an non-network activated Andriod phone just for use as a GPS?
I know iPhones all need cell service for GPS to work but Andriod phones can typically use the GPS, play music and use wifi without cell service.

I have an old Andriod 6 Active sitting in a drawer at home. Might just charge it up and try it.

If you try to use a non-cellular device with Android Auto or CarPlay you'll need to have it connected via wifi hotspot, but it'll work. You will need to make that non-cell device primary bluetooth device for media or you'll have problems, and it still has problems for phone calls, so you'll just have to try it out and see how it goes. I tried it for a while and it wasn't worth it.

iphones do not need cellular for the GPS function to work. your app may need it for the maping or you need to cache it ahead of time.

I think I read somewhere that those of us with NAV-less SYNC can have it upgraded to gain the NAV.

This sound right? Is it as simple as downloading new firmware for the head unit?

Or does this require swapping out a whole new head unit?

swapping the unit out, the non nav does not have enough storage.

i@Airborne_Ape was looking into if it was possable to add the nav daughtercard to the non nav APIM , i think it was AA anyways.

I haven't done it but other people here have. User @Acool was one of those people.

I assume the process is something like this:
  • Take apart your APIM.
  • Disconnect GPSM.
  • Add the navigation riser card.
  • Flash with new firmware.
  • Wipe and install Sync 3 with Format tool and whichever files are needed.
  • Install separate GPS antenna
Personally, I wouldn't call any of that easy (for the average owner). I've never done it and might be missing some steps, but I can't foresee why someone wouldn't be able to add nav for less than $100 if they put in the time and effort.
  • The easy way is significantly more expensive and that's just swapping out your APIM for one you find at a jink yard with NAV then adding any cheap farka GPS antenna from amazon.

I have an old Android at home that I use for those purposes, but I haven't tried connecting it to Sync. I don't see any reason it wouldn't work.
