Default Rims

Has anyone tried painting their rims? I also have some curb rash in a few spots. Not sure how to repair those.

Have the stock chtome rims that come on a Platinum. I like them. Just would like them better gloss black.

700 to do all 4. Another 300 for calipers. Way cheaper than buying new wheels

I've painted a few aluminum wheels. All the effort is in the prep.

Scrub the crap out of them with wheel cleaner and 3M green pads. You've got to ensure there is no brake dust left to sand into the paint. I do this twice.

Degreaser. More 3M pads.

I start with 160 grit, then 240 grit. I do two stages with the 240, a regular sanding, then a very light sanding back over all of it. I typically wipe the wheel down with water at this point to get rid of the dust.

Mask the tire.

Paint prep degreaser. I do this twice.

Etch primer for aluminum. Even if you didn't go all the way through the paint, use this, it is still a primer that will help the paint stick.

Spray according to the instructions on whatever brand paint you use.

I've been getting quotes of $1,100 - $1,200. At that price it might make more sense to buy new rims.

get them powdercoated. You can have the whole set done for $500-600.

That is for powder quoting. Below is one of the emails from one of the companies I asked for a quote.

Looks like they are 20" polished wheels. If that's correct, it would cost $1,188.00+ tax. That would be for everything, straightening, stripping, blasting, weld-reshaping, gloss black, mount/balance and lift-labor for dropping the truck off. You can save $100 off this price if you were to bring us the wheels off the truck. We would need to schedule an appointment if you planned to drop the truck, no appointment needed if you bring us the wheels off the truck.
I attached two pictures, gloss black and our stone black.
