Default Ram Guys, I now get it!!!

Haters, don’t hate. I am a Ford guy. I own a 2017 F150 with the Second Gen 3.5 / 10 speed and love it. No issues what so ever (close to a perfect truck).

With that being said, this week I picked up a Dodge Charger with the Hemi from Avis. WOW, what an engine. IF the Ram performs anything like that car … COOL. I could be running down the road at ~75 (speed limit in NC is 70 on many roads) and punch it … BAM, 82 MPH almost instantly. From a stand still, one inch depression on the throttle caused the rear to break lose. The transmission and engine were extremely well paired.

I don’t want a Fiat (read Ram) truck and will gladly stick with my Ford. But, I can see the appeal if the Ram performs anything like the Charger. (BTW: I am sure I would equally impressed with the Mustang 5.0 … never have driven one.)

As somebody who has driven both the charger and ram with the hemi I will say in my opinion the truck didn't seem near as responsive. Of course it's a lot heavier. I do agree that the hemi and 8-speed transmission did work extremely well together and were very smooth in their operation. What impressed me with the ram is how much better the ride was than my '15 f-150.

Ford solved this problem against the Hellcat at SEMA as there's a Ford Performance / Roush Supercharger kit that's 650hp on the F150, or 700 hp on the Mustang with the 5.0. So long as a dealer or ASE tech installs it, original warranty stays in place. The stock Mustang 5.0 is strong as it is, the new cars are under 4 seconds 0-60. My EB has outhauled more than one Hemi, so I'm not really all that impressed with those anyway.

It's all throttle mapping and torque control. Trucks will always have dampened torque and throttle response.

The Ram Hemi with a 3.92 diff has great acceleration, at nearly any speeds. With the 8 speed ZF transmission it's a really sweet pairing.

A Car's and Trucks engine performance can't be compared plain and simple...

The engine tuning differences between the two are so different and the body and suspension of a car is going to provide much greater advantage in performance from wind drag to stiff/short ride height. I owned a '14 Mustang GT 5.0 coyote that I traded in for my '15 F150(Child seats don't fit in a mustang for what its worth) and it has the same engine, but couldn't be light years different in performance. I literally cried when I first stomped on the throttle of my truck, not to mention when I found the top speed limiter kicked in 40mph slower

OP: I totally understand. I’ve never driven a RAM with a Hemi/8 sp but I daily drive a 2016 Charger with a Hemi and 3.07 gears. (Yours had 2.62 for reference). I absolutely love my Charger. I also love my 3.5 1st gen EB but it’s power is rather peaky compared to the broad range of the Charger with the Hemi. Different applications but at least I understand your enjoyment from the Charger.

Yeah I own a 2010 Challenger that has been tuned, it put down about 370hp at the rear wheels. They are pretty quick but in the trucks with the extra weight, not as much so. Mine 2010 only has a 5 speed auto so the 8 speed makes them a little quicker.

My brother has an 2016 Ram 8 speed hemi supercab 2wd. That thing is fast! It has 20" wheels and basic options (so its pretty light compared to an optioned out truck). It ran a 14.1 @ 97 in the quarter mile! My 2013 ecoboost FX4 loaded (probably weighs 7-800 lbs more) ran a 15.0 at 89 mph with a better sixty then the RAM. Its amazing what the 8 speed does for the RAM. My cousin had a regular cab 2wd(no options)with the 5speed and it ran a best of 15.2 quarter mile.

My neighbor / friend is sales manager at Dodge dealership, showed me the RAM when I was in the market for a F150 a couple of years ago. In particularly the eco-diesel version. I was impressed with the look and sound of the eco-diesel, and I've been a diesel guy for years, but they were very new at the time. I was retiring my 99 F250 7.3 and wanted something with pulling power and had the 3.5 EB in mind.

What really got me about the RAM was the back seat compared to the F150, clearly only made to only accommodate 2 people comfortably, and not near the leg room. Plus I just find Dodge trucks just plain fugly.

Ended up with a 2015 F150 3.5 Screw, sales manager was disappointed but we ended up buying a 2016 4D Wrangler for the wife off of him a few months later anyway..
