The "older" models only engage the IWE's at temps below freezing for the first 3 miles of vehicle operation to help warm up the oil in the front differential. The steering feel gets noticeably lighter when the IWE's disengage after those 3 miles, so I know having them engaged puts a drag on the system. I'd rather have the system working as designed rather than have the IWE's engaged 100% of the time like the newer models.

I just recently replaced the check valve on mine even though it was working fine. I see it as one of those maintenance items that should have occasional attention.

I can confirm. Mine is the newer blue one (2020) On two trips, 30 miles in, colder temps (25F), I have had some slight grinding, flipped to 4A and went away. Seems mine fails after a decent travel period. I have the spare from Amazon, but since I have 4A, and it is so rare, I have not swapped it out. I plan to next trip it acts up, swap mid trip for a fair test.
