Default Purpose of Dash Panel Drawer

I just observed this opening in the small drawer at the base of the dash panel. I suppose it could be intended as an access for a USB cable if one were to store a cell phone in there, but I wonder whether it has a specific intended purpose? Obviously it can't be too important as I just noticed it after 3 years, but I'm curious.

I use mine for the face plate of a Yaesu 7900 dual band ham radio. It fits perfectly inside and still closes. I can operate the radio with it closed if I desire as the microphone has built in control buttons, and the face plate doesn't generate any heat. The main radio chassis is remotely mounted under and behind the hidden backseat area on the floor . It almost looks like the compartment was custom made for this radio. I'm not sure, but it looks like it could be intended as an ashtray with the smokers option.

I think you're right. The cut out must be there for a corded connection to a stowed device.

The "Sync" badge on it makes me agree with this. I did use it for a while for my phone, but I had to get a cord with a 90' USB connection to fit (like the cut-out on the jump-seat center console, it's clearly engineered for 2012 phone sizes, not 2019 phone sizes).

Yep, just like the "phone holder" spot on my jump seat console. Way to small.

Very nice installation, Randy. 73!

Thanks, all. I keep various keys in mine, such as the key to a trailer hitch lock. It's a good size for that.
